Football: Mater Dei-Carson set for ESPN2

The season debut of USC-bound Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley gets prime-time coverage on the East Coast on Wednesday, when the Monarchs take on Carson at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 from Long Beach Veterans Stadium.

There’s going to be much scrutiny for Mater Dei’s new group of receivers to see if they will be able to catch the ball. Sophomore Victor Blackwell and junior Derek Campbell are the receivers to watch.

Mater Dei also must deal with USC-bound Morrell Presley of Carson at tight end and defensive end. ‘We have to account for him,’ Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said. ‘He’s a player.’
