Michael Rivera caught a middle screen from quarterback Matt Viles and raced into the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown at the end of the first quarter, enabling Edison to tie Mater Dei, 7-7.
The key play on a 79-yard, 10-play drive was a pass interference penalty against Mater Dei on fourth-and-12 from the Monarchs’ 40. The fact Coach Dave White decided not to have his team punt showed the confidence he has in his offense.
Edison’s offense has been receiving a strong performance from running back Wade Houston, who didn’t practice this week because of a turf toe injury. He has rushed for 38 yards in seven carries.
