Football: Loyola is close to naming a coach

The last big coaching hire in football could be decided this week, as Los Angeles Loyola is down to four finalists and will have a second round of interviews, followed by an announcement possibly next week, depending on contract negotiations.
There has been much speculation about who made the cut. Loyola people say one of the candidates has ties to the Oklahoma Sooners.
But the biggest speculation revolves around whether former Loyola assistant Drew Casani, a scout with the St. Louis Rams, is still in the running. If he is, he might be considered the favorite.
Loyola officials have declined to discuss the candidates publicly, which means the pressure is on to pick a good one. The alumni are waiting and watching. Former Coach Jeff Kearin resigned in the middle of the season last year. Interim Coach Adam Guerra applied for the position and whether he gets it or not, it would be a surprise if he isn’t back in some capacity since players hold him in high regard.
The winning candidate will have to compete in a Serra League that’s loaded with top coaches.
