Boys’ basketball: Long Beach Poly seeks revenge

Long Beach Poly Coach Sharrief Metoyer said his Jackrabbits ‘played one of our worst games at the wrong time’ when they faced Etiwanda last month in a Southern Section Division 1AA semifinal.

Then Metoyer caught himself.

‘They had a lot to do with it,’ he acknowledged.

The Eagles tend to do that to teams, flustering them into their worst moments of the season and prompting lots of head-shaking. But the Jackrabbits will get a chance to atone for their performance at 7 tonight when they play Etiwanda again in a Southern California Regional Division I quarterfinal at Etiwanda.

Poly (27-4) is coming off a commanding performance in an 87-62 first-round victory over Crenshaw, its first game since the Etiwanda defeat. The Eagles (24-9) are coming off a 67-58 victory over Oceanside El Camino Real that followed a 68-65 loss to Mater Dei in the Division 1AA championship.

‘We’ll be ready,’ Metoyer vowed.
