Baseball: L.A. Roosevelt pitcher taken by Blue Jays

On the third and final day of baseball’s amateur draft, Gabriel Romero, the younger brother of Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Ricky Romero, was chosen by the Blue Jays in the 47th round.

Gabriel Romero just finished his senior year at Los Angeles Roosevelt.

There were 1,525 players selected in three days. Among the notable picks in rounds 31 through 50, second baseman Matt Valaika, a Newhall Hart grad and brother of Reds farm hand Chris Valaika, went to the Cardinals in round 34.

Encino Crespi shortstop Kevin Williams went to the Dodgers in round 43; Los Angeles Crenshaw infielder Lei’jon Baker went to the Braves in round 43.

Stanford-bound shortstop Lonnie Kauppila from Burbank went to the Athletics in round 44. Simi Valley Royal pitcher Tyler Abbott was taken by the Marlins in round 44

Pitcher Eric Pettis, a former Woodland Hills El Camino Real standout, was chosen by the Phillies in round 35.

Two members of the Los Angeles Loyola 2007 Southern Section championship team were drafted. Danny Muno, a shortstop at Fresn State, was taken by the Cubs in the 26th round, and outfielder Steve Selsky from Arizona went to the Rockies in round 34.
