Former Westlake Village Oaks Christian running back Malcolm Jones was one of the candidates for the Gatorade Athlete of the Year that was announced Wednesday during a luncheon at LA Live, but you could tell he was already into the college life as a UCLA Bruin.
Jones lost out to basketball standout Brandon Knight from Florida. He expressed disappointment in not winning, but Jones has moved beyond his high school days. He’s taking classes at UCLA, working out with the Bruins and preparing to try to make an impact this fall as a freshman.
His older brother, Marshall, a defensive back at USC, attended the luncheon and is looking forward to tackling his brother in the USC-UCLA game.
‘I can’t wait,’ Marshall said. ‘I got him.’
Asked about his brother’s comment, Malcolm said. ‘I’m going to let the playing do the talking.’
That’s Jones. He’s planning to show his performance in high school that ended with being chosen the Gatorade national player of the year in football was deserving.
Here’s a brief talk with Jones.
