After Kaylah Miller scored her fifth three-pointer over Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis’ outstretched arms to give La Jolla Country Day a 41-36 lead with just a few minutes remaining in the third quarter, Mosqueda-Lewis paused, looked at the crowd and proceeded to show why she’s the top-ranked player in the 2011 class.
The Connecticut-bound senior took control, scoring eight points to close the quarter and 24 of her game-high 28 points in the second half to give Mater Dei a 68-54 win at the Nike Extravaganza at Santa Ana Mater Dei.
‘I knew I had to start hitting my shots,’ Mosqueda-Lewis said. ‘We were kind of in a funk.’
Lewis had gone 2 for 12 from the field in the first half and La Jolla Country Day led, 28-25, at halftime, but Mater Dei Coach Kevin Kiernan said he wasn’t worried.
‘I said, ‘Kaleena’s not going to miss very many more shots,’ Kiernan said. ‘She’s the best player in the country.’
Jessica Duarte scored 15 and Kaija Powell had 10 for Mater Dei (22-1). Maya Hood led La Jolla Country Day (20-4) with 19, Miller had 15 and Kelsey Plum had 13.
