Baseball: Good pitching and some upsets on first day

The first full day of baseball produced some surprises and good pitching, too.

Huntington Beach Marina stunned Placentia El Dorado, 2-0. Jake Tillinghast struck out seven in five innings and Mitch Huffman got the save with four strikeouts. Chatsworth got 12 strikeouts from Angel Rodriguez, three htis from Brady Conlan and a double and triple from Aaron Brown in a 7-3 win over Santa Monica.

West Hills Chaminade held off Rio Mesa, 2-1. Jimmy Jauregui had the game-winning RBI and Mathew Troup contributed two hits. Scott Heineman threw a three-hitter in Encino Crespi’s 4-2 win over Lancaster. Matt Lathuras allowed two hits in five innings in Sherman Oaks Notre Dame’s 6-1 win over Arleta. Mission Hills Alemany defeated Palmdale, 8-4.

Newbury Park defeated Golden Valley, 9-4. Valencia pounded St. Francis, 11-2, behind Quincy Quintero, who had a triple, two doubles and four RBIs. Alex Bishop and Shane Zeile had three hits apiece. Huntington Beach upset Corona Santiago, 3-2.

JSerra came away with a 6-1 win over Tesoro. Clay Williamson went two for three with a solo home run. Orange Lutheran defeated Esperanza, 6-2. El Toro defeated Villa Park, 10-0. Tyler Brashears struck out 10 in five innings and Mitchell Tolman hit a three-run home run.

Bellflower St. John Bosco defeated Redondo, 5-3. Koby Gauna threw a four-hit complete game. Travis Radke had 12 strikeouts to help Oaks Christian defeat El Camino Real, 2-1.

Chris Santoro picked up the victory, Ryan Barr got the save and Ty Moore had two hits in Mater Dei’s 3-2 win over Corona. Troy Rallings allowed four hits in six innings and Sam Lorenzini had three hits as Los Alamitos defeated La Palma Kennedy, 7-1.

Birmingham (4-0) defeated Culver City, 7-4. Kevin Torres struck out six and Pedro Santoyo had a double and two RBIs. Camarillo and Ventura ended in a 2-2 tie through nine innings. Hunter Virant had three hits for Camarillo. Nick Griffith homered for Ventura. Yucaipa defeated Rancho Cucamonga, 4-2, with Kevin Davidson getting two hits and also pitching five innings.
