Girls’ basketball: Mater Dei leads Canyon Springs at halftime, 25-24

Mater Dei clings to a 25-24 halftime lead thanks, in part, to the play of Alexyz Vaioletama.

The senior forward has 13 points and three rebounds for the Monarchs, who, despite their size advantage, have had difficulty cracking the Canyon Springs defense down low. So far, the Cougars have held Connecticut-bound Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis to four points.

Jasmine Johnson has nine points and four rebounds for the Cougars, who are looking to pull off another upset following the victory over Brea Olinda in the semifinals.

Another upset could be in the making if Canyon Springs continues to match the Monarchs physically under the basket.
