The Mission League already figures to be competitive with West Hills Chaminade, La Canada St. Francis, Gardena Serra, Los Angeles Cathedral and Santa Fe Springs St. Paul, and now Studio City Harvard-Westlake is showing signs of potential behind a no-huddle offense that is putting up points in bunches.
Junior quarterback Chad Kanoff has passed for 14 touchdowns with only one interception in three games for the 2-1 Wolverines.
The new offense was put in by assistant coach Scot Ruggles, who learned it from Oregon Coach Chip Kelly when he helped coach at New Hampshire. Ruggles moved to California to become an actor.
‘It’s not Oregon’s offense because we don’t have Oregon’s speed, but it’s the concept of Kelly,’ head Coach Vic Eumont said. ‘This offense is designed to spread the ball, and he’s [Kanoff] doing it.’
There’s no truth to the rumor Ruggles joined the Harvard-Westlake staff to meet Ashton Kutcher, who briefly served as an assistant coach for the freshman team in 2008, right?
‘Ashton hasn’t helped us in a while,’ Eumont said. ‘He’s pretty busy.’
