Gamal Smalley, on administrative leave after Pasadena Muir had to forfeit 20 games because of an ineligible player, said he resigned last Thursday as coach.
‘I just felt it was in the best interest to move aside,’ said Smalley, who finished his third season as coach.
The school district is investigating why a player was allowed to play for the Mustangs with questions about his residency in doubt. The school’s athletic director is no longer handling athletic director duties and the principal won’t be back in the fall. The ineligible player has since left Muir.
Smalley could become a candidate for the vacant coaching position at Pasadena La Salle. His eighth-grade son, Zachary, is considered a promising basketball player.
