Clay Matthews, a former Oaks Christian defensive coordinator who reduced his coaching time to watch his sons, Clay III and Casey, in the NFL, said Thursday he will not be a candidate for the head coach position.
‘It’s something I’d be very interested in, but with the boys playing in the NFL . . .I’m enjoying the opportunity seeing them play,’ he said.
Matthews said retiring head coach Bill Redell was willing to step down earlier if he was interested in the position. Matthews is hoping to continue as a part-time coach with the Lions depending on who replaces Redell.
Matthews, a former All-Pro linebacker with the Cleveland Browns, has earned the reputation as an outstanding assistant coach. One day, when his sons are finished playing, he will likely become more serious about pursuing a head coach position.
