Football: Alemany wins its sixth summer passing championship

The summer is pretty much over for Mission Hills Alemany, and what a summer it was. The Warriors won their sixth summer passing tournament championship on Saturday, beating Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in the final of the Saugus seven-on-seven tournament.

Quarterback Devon Dunn once again took apart opponents behind his receiving trio of Steven Mitchell, Devin Ross and Desean Holmes. Safety Brandon Boyd and linebacker Quentin Tartabull have come up big all summer. Alemany won championships at Pierce College, Valley College, College of the Canyons, Dana Hills and the Conejo Valley tournament.

The Warriors’ talent in the skill-position area should make them a Pac-5 Division title contender. Alemany begins its 21-day mandatory summer break at the end of next week.

‘We’re talented at wide receiver and our quarterback is doing a good job putting the ball where it needs to be,’ Alemany Coach Dean Herrington said. ‘But it gets us nothing for December. It’s not real football, but it’s good to compete.’

Notre Dame knocked off Long Beach Poly, Crespi and Oaks Christian to reach the final. Against Oaks Christian, both benches emptied after Notre Dame scored on the final play. One Notre Dame player suffered a cut during a brawl, according to a Notre Dame coach. The two schools are scheduled to scrimmage each other in August.

Defensively, the Knights were led by linebacker JJ Muno and defensive backs Matt McNab, Nick Holland and Koa Farmer.

Hart lost to Alemany in the semifinals.

Next Saturday, there are tournaments at Mission Viejo and El Toro, among others.
