Quarterback Cody Cordell 7 of 11 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns and he ran for another score as Crespi routed visiting Fresno Clovis West, 49-7, in tonight’s intersectional game in Encino.
Okalani Langi rushed for 140 yards and one touchdown in 17 carries while JB Blackwell had two TD catches and ran 92 yards for another score as the Celts improved to 4-0. Cordell sat out the fourth quarter when a running clock was used.
‘JB gave me so many options,’ Cordell said of Blackwell. ‘He’s a playmaker, he’s blazing fast and he knows how to go from side to side and get upfield.’
A ceremony was held at halftime in remembrance of Rob O’Byrne, quarterback of Crespi’s 1986 CIF championship team. Bill Redell, who coached that team, couldn’t attend because he was coaching his first game at Occidental College, but his son recited a letter Reddell wrote about O’Byrne, who was killed over the summer.
‘I have fond memories of Robert and that team, which is still the only [Southern Section] Division 1 championship team from the San Fernando Valley,’ Redell wrote. ‘He could run and throw and he played defense. It was a pleasure to have coached him and to have known him.’
Redell lost in his college coaching debut, 27-6, on Saturday night to Pacific University of Oregon.
