Italian energy giant Eni has resumed oil production in Libya for the first time since March, when fighting between Moammar Kadafi’s government and the forces that toppled him forced the company to suspend operations.
Some 31,900 barrels of crude a day are being generated at 15 wells at the Abu-Attifel oil field, about 185 miles south of the eastern city of Benghazi, Eni said in a statement Monday.
‘In the coming days, other wells will be reactivated in order to reach the required volumes to fill the pipeline connecting the field to the Zuetina terminal,’ the statement says.
Operations at Abu-Attifel are being conducted by Mellitah Oil & Gas, a joint venture of Eni and Libya’s state-run National Oil Corp.
Before the uprising, Libya exported about 1.6 million barrels of oil a day, amassing about $50 billion a year in revenues. Eni was producing oil and gas equivalent to about 280,000 barrels a day. The company expects to resume gas production in Libya in mid-October.
