Jerry Berndt, football coach at the University of Pennsylvania, narrowly averted serious injury from a chain saw in a fall that left him with a broken hand and four broken ribs.
Berndt, 46, was standing on a ladder at his home in the Philadelphia suburb of Berwyn Saturday while using a chain saw to cut a limb from a tree. The limb suddenly gave way and knocked Berndt off the ladder.
As he was falling, Berndt threw the chain saw away from where he would land. But when he put his hand out to cushion the fall, he suffered his injuries.
