L.A. Firms Install Devices Treating Cyanide Residues

Five buildings in the downtown Los Angeles jewelry district have installed equipment to neutralize cyanide flowing into city sewer lines, Mal Toy, a senior city sanitation engineer, said Monday.

The five former office structures, on Broadway and Hill Street near 5th and 6th streets, now contain numerous jewelry fabrication firms that use cyanide compounds in refining precious metals. In recent months, owners of one building were ordered to stop all waste discharges into the sewer lines, and sewer connections for another building were cut off.
