Grandson of Ohrbach Store Founder Dies
Jeffrey Ohrbach, 38, grandson of the founder of Ohrbach’s department stores, has been found dead in his Brentwood home. Coroner’s toxicology tests are being performed to determine the cause of death, authorities said Monday.
Los Angeles Police Detective Lt. Ron Lewis said a friend discovered Ohrbach’s body Friday night at his home in the 400 block of North Bundy Drive.
Coroner’s spokesman Bill Gold said an autopsy conducted Monday indicated that Ohrbach had been dead for “several days or more.” The autopsy did not reveal the cause of death, and toxicological tests for drugs and other substances were scheduled, Gold said.
Ohrbach was the grandson of Nathan M. Ohrbach, the Vienna-born merchant who founded the Ohrbach’s chain in New York and Los Angeles. A spokesman for Ohrbach’s said the family sold its interest in the chain in 1961. A spokesman for the family declined to comment on the death.
A family friend who asked not to be named said that Jeffrey Ohrbach was a businessman and real estate investor who never became involved in the family retailing chain. The friend said he was divorced and leaves a young son.
“He was just a nice, unassuming, decent guy who liked to live his life kind of quietly,” the friend said.
