Meese’s Hearings Scheduled

WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee said today that it has scheduled hearings beginning Jan. 29 for the nomination of Edwin Meese III as attorney general.
President Reagan last week renominated Meese to replace Atty. Gen. William French Smith, who resigned nearly a year ago, pending confirmation of his successor. Meese’s first nomination ran into trouble over his personal finances and other dealings, but he was cleared by a special prosecutor.
