Boys Roundup : La Habra Has Easy Time With St. Paul, 78-69

All five starters for La Habra High School scored in double figures as the Highlanders defeated St. Paul, 78-69, Monday night in a nonleague game at La Habra.

Guard Derek Stevens led the Highlanders (5-7) with 20 points. Jamie Martinez had 18 points, Eric Zaluske scored 15 and Henry Esparza and Don Hamano each contributed 10.

La Habra, which has won four of its last six games, led all the way. The Highlanders had a 10-point advantage in the second quarter before the Swordsmen cut the lead to three, 64-61, with five minutes remaining.

Zaluske score La Habra’s next six points to keep the Highlanders in control. Martinez helped hold off St. Paul by making all eight of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. As a team, La Habra made 16 of 22 from the line in the final period.

In other nonleague action:

Laguna Hills 60, Rancho Alamitos 57--Hawk forward Greg Conradt scored 8 of his 12 points in the first quarter, and contributed 8 rebounds in the final nonleague game for both teams at Rancho Alamitos. Mike Garcia, the point guard for Laguna Hills (8-5), added eight points in the second quarter, while helping the team control the ball against the Vaquero press. Rancho Alamitos dropped to 4-8.

In Sea View League action:

Laguna Beach 78, Woodbridge 60--The Warriors had difficulty retaining the ball against the Artist press in the second quarter, allowing the Artists to run off 23 straight points on their way to a victory in the Sea View League opener at Laguna Beach. Center Coby Naess had a season-high 29 points, but Coach Craig Falconer said his guards, Paul Watford and Todd Fortune, deserved the bulk of the credit for the win. Watford scored 14 points and had five assists.

WOODBRIDGE (60)--Townsend 14, Cryer 5, Lyon 15, Murphy 16, Bryan 2, Keefe 8.

LAGUNA BEACH (78)--Naess 29, Jordan 10, Elfsten 8, Watford 14, Herdman 2, Lawler 4, Fortune 5, Dewitt 4.
