Chris Washburn took a stereo from a friend’s room as a college prank, lawyers for the North Carolina State basketball player maintained. But a Raleigh, N.C., judge ordered the freshman bound over to a grand jury on a burglary charge.
Wake District Attorney Randolph Riley said Washburn is no “special case” and urged Judge Narley Cashwell to hold him responsible for his actions.
Washburn, a 6-11 forward, was arrested Dec. 21 on a the second-degree burglary charge, and N.C. State Coach Jim Valvano dismissed him from the team.
Washburn already is on probation. He was convicted Dec. 19 of assaulting a female student, fined $25 and given a 90-day suspended sentence.
