Compton Community College trustees are considering five finalists, none of them local, to replace Abel B. Sykes, who left the college in July after 15 years as president.

The trustees discussed the qualifications of the five finalists, selected from 35 applicants, at a board meeting Monday, and may choose the new president by early February, college spokesman Charles Cropsey said.

Cropsey refused to name the finalists, but he said all have recent experience as “top level” college administrators.

The salary of the new president of the 3,300-student campus will be negotiated, said Cropsey. Sykes made about $60,000 annually before leaving to become president of Kings River Community College in Reedley, southeast of Fresno.
