A proposed “super computer” center at UC San Diego got a $1-million allocation in Gov. George Deukmejian’s 1985-86 budget. The high-speed “numbers cruncher,” which would process extremely complex and lengthy equations, would serve industrial and academic users nationwide. If the National Science Foundation approves the proposal, made jointly by GA, UCSD and 17 other research institutions, the computer would be built and operated by GA Technologies Inc. of La Jolla. The NSF is expected to select six to eight such super computer centers next month from 23 proposals nationwide and to fund them with a first-year grant of $40 million, GA spokeswoman Nikki Hobson said. The Deukmejian Administration proposes to spend $10 million over the next 10 years to pay for UC researchers’ access to the super computer.
