The wife of a man who admitted making the silencer for a .45-caliber handgun allegedly used by Royal Kenneth Hayes to murder his former lover and her companion testified that she participated in crimes with her husband because of a “need for love and attention.” Sondra Johnson, 47, said she thought if she helped her husband, James (Big John) Johnson in his criminal career, “then he’d love me, and then he’d change and then we’d live happily ever after.” She is a witness in the Santa Cruz Superior Court trial of Hayes, accused of murdering Lauren DeLaet, 36, and Donald MacVicar, 32, on Dec. 29, 1981, and burying their mutilated bodies on the UC Santa Cruz campus.
