Angelus League : Lewis Scores 36 Points to Lead Mater Dei Past St. Paul, 70-53
Mater Dei High School, led by senior Tom Lewis, defeated St. Paul, 70-53, in the Angelus League opener at St. Paul.
The victory was the 23rd consecutive league win for the Monarchs, who are 16-0 overall. Lewis, who made 17 of 22 from the field, scored 36 points and also led the Monarchs in rebounds with 13. Stuart Thomas and Tom Peabody each had seven assists for Mater Dei.
The Swordsmen, led by junior guard John Scott’s 14 points, dropped to 4-8 overall, 0-1 league. St. Paul’s starting center Matt Willig fouled out and did not score.
Pius X 67, Servite 58--Anthony Jenkins and Richard Ante combined for 39 points as the Warriors held off a late Friar rally to win their first league game of the year. Antee scored 19 points, 17 in the first half, and Jenkins added 20 for the Warriors.
Servite drew to within three points with 29 seconds remaining on a tip in by Bob Coady, but Ernest White’s two free throws with 11 seconds left sealed the Warriors’ win. Coady led the Friars with 18 points.
