In response to the dismay expressed by leaders of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith over his letter calling for compassion toward accused Nazi war criminal Andrija Artukovich, Cardinal Timothy Manning has agreed to meet with leaders of the Jewish organization to discuss the contents of the letter, a spokesman for the head of the Los Angeles Roman Catholic archdiocese said. The meeting, set for Jan. 31, will give the ADL leaders a chance to convey the national organization’s distress over the cardinal’s letter of support for Artukovich, 85, of Surfside in Orange County, who the government of Yugoslavia is attempting to extradite and try for the deaths of 770,000 Serbs, Gypsies and Jews during World War II, according to Harvey B. Schechter, regional director of the ADL, who requested the meeting.
