A Stanford couple whose solar home has been thrown into shadow by their neighbors’ trees have found there is no right to sunlight in California. In a lawsuit, Rudolph and Bonnie Sher charged that their neighbors’ trees were a “private nuisance.” But Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Taketsugu Takei ruled that there is no right to solar access in the Golden State. The neighbors and the Shers are all professors at Stanford University, but the dispute has destroyed relations between the families, said Bonnie Sher, who says she and her husband are considering appealing Takei’s decision.
