Girls Roundup : University Wins Its First of the Season
University High School won its first game of the season Tuesday, defeating Laguna Beach, 43-29, at Laguna Beach.
Katie Ho led the Trojans with 12 points. Jean Mao added 11.
Earlier this season, University was beaten by Mission Viejo, 118-10.
Cheryl Miller added 10 points for University (1-11, 1-5). Taura Weingaren had 12 points to lead Laguna Beach (1-13 overall).
In other Sea View League action:
Ocean View 82, Huntington Beach 42--Center Trina Vlachos had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Seahawks. Michelle Chomicz added 15 points and 9 rebounds. Ocean View (14-4, 4-0) guard Dana Douty, averaging 10 assists a game did herself one better by handing out 11.
Corona del Mar 49, Saddleback 43--Playing only three quarters, senior guard Fran Wynn scored 23 points had 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Sea Kings to the easy win at home. Michelle Ward had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Corona del Mar (8-5, 5-1). Saddleback’s Monica Walton led all scorers with 28 points.
Costa Mesa 30, Newport Harbor 23--Katie McKibben led Costa Mesa with 12 points.
In Century League play:
Foothill 69, Canyon 32--Jennifer Osur continued her scoring spree leading the Sentinels with 30 points in the game played at Foothill. Osur had scored a season-high 32 points in Foothill’s 77-32 victory over El Modena last Thursday. Foothill (16-3, 7-0) completes the first round of league play in first place. Point guard Felice Geddy had 15 points and 3 assists while center Chris McFerson led the team with 11 rebounds.
The Sentinels were never threatened in the game, leading 24-1 after the first quarter.
Canyon was led by Angie Nelson’s 12 points, Danyell Rogers had 10. Canyon’s league record fell to 3-4.
In Orange League play:
Brea-Olinda 61, Savanna 34--It was another easy win for the Wildcats, rated No. 1 in Orange County. Sophomore forward Carrie Egan led Brea with 18 points. Brea is 18-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. With so many easy wins Wildcat Coach Mark Trakh’s second string players have logged more time in league play than his starters. Savanna fell to 1-2 in league.
In South Coast League play:
Dana Hills 54, Laguna Hills 51 (OT)--Dolphin forward Kim Larkins hit a 10-foot jump shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Dana Hills (3-9, 3-3) then outscored its opponent, 5-2, in the overtime period.
Larkins finished with 10 points. Roberta Forster led the Dolphins with 21 points. Laguna Hills’ Julia Monahan led all scorers with 23 points.
Mission Viejo 59, Irvine 58--Lori Totosz hit a 10-foot jumper with 20 seconds left to seal the Diablos’ win. Totosz led all scorers with 18 points. Irvine’s Dina Graham had 17.
El Toro 54, San Clemente 22--Vicki Mallet scored 19 of her game-high 23 points in the second half to lead El Toro. Jennifer Uecke added 18 points. El Toro is now 4-1 in league.
In Garden Grove League action:
Rancho Alamitos 56, Los Amigos 40--The Vaqueros had a six-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Lobos by 10 in the last quarter to improve their record to 2-1 in league. Celeste Paquette scored eight of her 13 points in the final quarter to lead Rancho Alamitos. Julie McCall was the Lobos’ leading scorer with 16 points.
Los Amigos was led by Lulu Casanova’s 13 points.
In Freeway League action:
Fullerton 53, La Habra 49--The Indians had not beat the Highlanders in four years coming into this game. However Fullerton made 21 of 37 shots, including 17 of 21 in the first half to get the win.
Sandra Williams led the Indians with 14 points, Pam Fritsch added 11. Fullerton is in first place in the league with a 3-0 record. The Indians are 10-4 overall. La Habra dropped to 2-1 in league.
In Empire League action:
El Dorado 74, Kennedy 61--Jill Matyuch had 31 points to tie her season-high and Cathy Newvine added 15 in this game played at El Dorado.
The Golden Hawks led by three points after the third quarter but Joan Pesl scored 8 of her 12 points in the final quarter to lead El Dorado to its fifth win in league play.
Ursula Lovely and Jawanni Cousett each had 19 points for the Fighting Irish (10-6, 4-3).
In Sunset League action:
Marina 57, Westminster 50--Heather Kirkup scored a season-high 16 points and Stephanie Sabelino added 13 points and 8 assists to lead Marina (8-10, 1-3) to its first win in league play.
Westminster (6-12, 0-4) forward Jeannine Battaglia had 16 points.
Fountain Valley 54, Edison 33--Denise Gielarowski scored 12 points and Dawn Lawler added 11 points for the Barons (12-6, 3-1).
Michelle Hennessey had 10 points for Edison.
In Empire League action:
Loara 56, Los Alamitos 19--Liz Eldridge and Shanna Beer had 17 and 12 points respectively. Loara is 14-5 overall and 5-2 in league.
