Rock Cod Abundant Off Outer Islands

Very good to excellent outer island rock cod fishing was reported this week by anglers aboard Cisco’s Sportfishing boats out of Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard. Trips leave Oxnard at about 2 a.m. and return 18 hours later. Catches this week have included cow cod averaging 15 pounds.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--29 anglers: 137 rock cod, 181 red rock cod, 37 red snapper, 80 bass

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--14 anglers: 39 bonito, 20 rock cod, 1 calico bass, 1 sand bass.

OXNARD--82 anglers: 978 rock cod, 24 cow cod, 1 ling cod.

PORT HUENEME--26 anglers: 149 rock cod, 3 cow cod, 94 red snapper, 5 calico bass, 95 sand bass, 1 halibut.

MALIBU--30 anglers: 8 calico bass, 4 sand bass, 228 rock cod, 140 rock fish, 1 cow cod.

MARINA DEL REY--57 anglers: 1 halibut, 6 rock fish, 8 calico bass, 43 sand bass, 60 mackeral, 110 rock cod.

REDONDO--29 anglers: 230 rock cod.

LONG BEACH (Belmont Pier)--47 anglers: 130 rock fish, 238 rock cod, 1 cow cod. (Queen’s Wharf)--16 anglers: 2 barracuda, 25 bonito, 11 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 165 rock fish.

NEWPORT (Newport Landing)--8 anglers: 50 rock fish, 8 mackerel, 2 sand bass. (Davey’s Locker)--33 anglers: 201 rock cod, 5 sand bass, 3 makerel, 14 cow cod.

DANA WHARF--30 anglers: 22 bass, 3 rock fish, 79 mackerel.

OCEANSIDE--23 anglers: 18 calico bass, 41 sand bass.

SAN DIEGO (H&M; Landing, Fisherman’s, Point Loma)--31 anglers: 150 bonito, 9 bass, 9 rock fish, 90 mackerel.

Freshwater

Fishermen at most Southland reservoirs and at several Colorado River sites reported good trout fishing this week.

WILLOW BEACH--Good shore fishing for rainbow trout from boats upriver from resort. Fair shore fishing.

LAKE MEAD--Some reports of largemouth and striped bass activity in Overton Arm. Lower basin anglers finding action on small stripers in 60- to 85-foot depths with frozen anchovies.

BULLHEAD CITY--Improved fishing for trout on river, from shores or drifting. Good lake action on trout trolling and from shores off points.

SALTON SEA--Fair for orangemouth corvina at Red Hill, New River areas. Good sargo bite, north side. Good for tilapia in deep water only. Croaker slow.

LAKE CACHUMA--Fair for largemouth bass. Redear sunfish good off Jackrabbit Point.

LAKE CASITAS--Good for trout, crappies. Some trout limits seen this week. Bass slow.

LAKE PYRAMID--Slow for stripers. Good catfish results this week, from boats off swimming beach, inflow channel.

LAKE PIRU--Good trout fishing, trolling lead core line four colors. Some still-fishing success for trout with standard baits.

LAKE CASTAIC--Some trout limits. Other species slow.

LAKE ISABELLA--Good action on big crappies in deep water at center of lake. Fish to two pounds reported.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Otay: Opening day bass results Wednesday slightly lower than last year’s. Turnout: 975 fishermen, who caught 256 largemouth bass. Tops: Dennis Cintas, Bonita, 9-4. Launch conditions remain slow. San Vicente: Very slow for bass. Katherine Hancock, San Diego, 27-14 blue catfish with mackerel bait. Miramar: Good for trout, bass slow.

IRVINE LAKE--Good trout fishing continues in West Shore area, for anglers using standard baits. Other species slow.

PERRIS RESERVOIR--Good fishing for pan size trout. Lake-record bluegill: 2-13, by Richard Serna, Perris, with mealworm in marina. Doug Renman, Colton, 16-2 channel catfish with water dog.

VAIL LAKE--Good for trout. Some success on crappies in deep water by dam. Slow for bass.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Signs of brown trout, striped bass activity. Several of both caught this week, in deep water. Good crappie bite.

BISHOP REGION--Good results on Lower Owens River for pan size rainbow trout, with standard baits, lures. Brown trout area of river fair. Pleasant Valley Reservoir fair for small trout.
