NHL Roundup : Two Goals, One Assist for Oilers’ Krushelnyski
Mike Krushelnyski scored two goals and assisted on another by Wayne Gretzky to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils Friday night at Edmonton, Canada.
After 48 games, Krushelnyski has 26 goals, his highest total in a four-year NHL career. The lanky left-winger had 25 goals in 66 games last year with Boston.
Edmonton’s Glenn Anderson opened the scoring at 8:18 of the first period when he picked up a loose puck and waited for netminder Ron Low to make the first move before shooting high in the net.
Mark Napier, whom Edmonton acquired Wednesday from Minnesota, drew an assist on the play for his first point as an Oiler.
New Jersey’s Rich Preston evened the score at 10:06 with a blast over Andy Moog’s shoulder at 10:06.
The Oilers regained the lead at 15:48 when Krushelnyski took advantage of his long reach to poke in a loose puck at the edge of the crease.
Gretzky then scored his 49th goal of the year at 14:04 of the second period to make it 3-1.
Krushelnyski made it 4-1 with his second goal of the game on a quick shot from close range at 5:07 of the third period.
Quebec 4, Buffalo 2--Mario Gosselin made 28 saves, several of the spectacular variety, to spark the Nordiques at Quebec.
The win moved the Nordiques one point ahead of the Sabres in the battle for second place in the Adams Division.
Gosselin, a 21-year-old rookie, was Quebec’s third-round draft choice in 1982. Last year he played for the Canadian Olympic team.
Calgary 6, Pittsburgh 6--Calgary’s Mike Eaves tied the score with his second goal of the game with only 31 seconds left in regulation at Calgary.
Pittsburgh rookie Mario Lemieux had scored his second goal of the night in the opening minutes of the third period to move the Penguins into a 6-5 lead.
Vancouver 7, Winnipeg 4--Stan Smyl scored twice, and the Canucks added three second-period goals in a span of less than two minutes to turn back the Jets at Vancouver. The victory snapped a four-game winless streak for the Canucks.
