Stanbra Scores 28 to Lead USD Women to Win Over Irvine, 60-49
SAN DIEGO — Mary Stanbra scored 28 points, Cathy O’Brien had 13 and Debbie Theroux added 12 as the University of San Diego won its sixth straight by defeating UC Irvine, 60-49, in a nonconference women’s basketball game at San Diego.
Cheri Graham scored 25 points and had 5 rebounds for UCI (13-4), which had a four-game winning streak snapped.
USD (9-10) held a 28-27 halftime lead, but then took control of the game in the second half. The Toreros built a 13-point lead, 46-33, with 12:25 to play. Irvine cut the margin to three, 50-47, with three minutes to go, but couldn’t get closer.
San Diego made 10 of 12 free throws in the final minute to clinch the win. The Toreros took 14 free throws attempts in the second half. UCI didn’t shoot any.
