The Times of London said Soviet officials have denied that ailing President Konstantin U. Chernenko has been urged to retire, but it quoted unnamed sources as saying that the Politburo may give some of his duties to others, especially Mikhail S. Gorbachev, 53. The report followed a story in the Times’ sister paper, the Sunday Times, saying that the 73-year-old Chernenko may be in the intensive-care unit of a Moscow hospital. Chernenko has not appeared in public since a televised awards ceremony on Dec. 27.
