Prep Basketball BOYS : San Fernando Loses It in Practice

For San Fernando High Coach Richard Crowell, practice did not make perfect.

“We just played like we played in practice yesterday,” said Crowell after San Fernando’s 69-47 loss to El Camino Real High on Wednesday. “They weren’t hitting their shots in practice, there wasn’t any discipline on the floor--and it showed today.”

The Tigers, who were coming off an impressive Friday night showing against Kennedy, made scored on only 16 of 72 field goals against the Conquistadores, who hit on 27 of 59 shots. San Fernando out-rebounded El Camino, 42-33, but most of those were offensive.

After center Cordell Seeley scored the first four points for the Tigers, the Conquistadores shut down the San Fernando offense for five minutes, racking up a comfortable 21-4 lead, before James Walton scored the Tigers’ sixth point with just seven seconds left in the first quarter.

It was all downhill from there for the Conquistadores as guard Rick Hergott, who hit 10 of 17 from the field, led both teams with 24 points and helped to improve El Camino’s Valley 4-A League record to 5-2. Forward Tony Goodall added 15 points and 9 rebounds while center Anthony Hines had 13 points and 9 rebounds.

For the Tigers, who fall to 1-6 in league, Steven Cooper had 11 points while Seeley finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Kennedy 65, Taft 64

Titus Randle hit a jumper late in the third overtime to lift host Kennedy over Taft and keep the Golden Cougars one game back of first place in the Valley 4-A League.

Only one shot was taken in the first two overtimes as both teams tightened up on defense. Kennedy’s Greg Fontenette missed that shot in the second overtime.

Late in the third overtime, Rameen Talesh hit a free throw to put Kennedy up by one--and after Randle’s jumper put the Golden Cougars up, 65-62.

For Kennedy, which improved its league record to 6-1, Randle, Fontenette and James Walton each finished with 12 points.

Bobby Green tossed in a game-high 17 points for Taft, which dropped to 2-5 in league.

Cleveland 100, Monroe 51

Trevor Wilson, the third-highest scorer in the Valley this season, tossed in 35 points against Monroe Wednesday as Cleveland rolled to its 14th straight win.

Erik Fuller had 16 points for the Vikings, who have lost their last nine of 12 games.

The Cavaliers improved their Valley 4-A League record to 7-0, while Monroe dropped to 0-7, 4-14 overall.

Chatsworth 48, Grant 44

Paced by Matt Bellers and Neil Coffman, Chatsworth lead from start to finish at Grant for its third Valley 3-A League win.

Bellers and Coffman each had eight points to lead the Chancellors, who improved their league record to 3-4.

Leading, 14-10, after the first quarter, Chatsworth took command in the second quarter, outscoring the Lancers by seven points to take a 27-16 halftime lead.

John Mason had a game-high 14 points in a losing effort for Grant, which drops its league record to 0-6.
