An elderly south San Diego man was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a fire Tuesday night forced the evacuation of his three-story apartment building. Capt. Ralph Lufkin of the San Diego Fire Department said the blaze broke out at 7:31 p.m. in the 700 block of 35th Street. Fourteen Fire Department units responded and doused the blaze within about 20 minutes. Damage, contained to one room, was estimated at $2,000. The unidentified victim was taken to San Diego Physicians and Surgeons Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition.
