California prison inmates repaired bicycles for poor children, fought fires, made tapes for the blind and performed other public services in 1984 valued at $7.7 million, the state reported. Daniel McCarthy, director of the Department of Corrections, said the labor of the volunteer workers totaled almost 1 million man-hours valued at $5 an hour.
