France Expels Two Basque Militants
PARIS — France expelled to the African island state of Cape Verde two militants of the Spanish Basque separatist group ETA, government sources have said.
Tomas Linaza Etcheverria, considered a senior member of a hard-line ETA offshoot known as the “Action Commandos,” was banished Friday with another Basque militant, Enrique Istueta Barandika.
France and Spain last year agreed to take joint measures to halt attacks by ETA (which stands for Basque Homeland and Freedom) whose guerrillas have waged a 15-year battle with Spanish authorities to secure independence for the northern Basque region.
