Doctor Strike Protests Kidnapings in Beirut
BEIRUT — Doctors at Beirut’s American University Hospital staged a four-hour strike Tuesday to protest the kidnapings of a hospital doctor and a student Sunday, a hospital spokesman said.
He said the strike was called after the men, both Christians, were abducted by gunmen near the hospital in mainly Muslim West Beirut.
The hospital has contacted local militia leaders and the authorities to help find the two men, but the reasons for the abduction and identity of the kidnapers were still unclear, he said.
Rival militias have abducted hundreds of people since Lebanon’s civil war started a decade ago.
