Prep Soccer : Esperanza Is Eliminated on Penalty Kicks
Esperanza High School boys’ soccer team came to an abrupt end Wednesday as the Aztecs were upset by Hacienda Heights Wilson, 2-1, in overtime in the second round of the 3-A Southern Section playoffs.
The loss was the Aztecs first of the season. With neither team scoring in two overtime periods, Wilson won the game on penalty kicks. The Wildcats made 4 of 5 shots, while Esperanza (21-1-1) made 3 of 5.
In other 3-A boys action:
Dana Hills 1, Rowland 0--Fifteen minutes into game center halfback Brad Drew got the game’s only score. The Dolphins’ Jon Kelly and David Devine each played outstanding defense.
In girls 4-A action:
Torrance 1, Mission Viejo--Nancy Smith kicked in a rebound as she was falling down 70 minutes into the match as the top-seeded Tartars advance to the quarterfinals.
El Toro 2, University 1 (OT)--Kim Carlander scored twice, including a kick from 10 yards out three minutes into overtime to advance the Chargers (17-5-3) into the quarterfinals.
In other girls 3-A action:
La Quinta 2, Villa Park 0--Kristin Harkins scored both goals for the Aztecs (21-2-2) in the second-round match at La Quinta. La Quinta plays Pacifica in quarter-final action Friday. The site will be determined by a coin flip today.
