Southland Sailing : Heavy Winds Turn Several Races Into Battle for Survival
Los Angeles Yacht Club’s Whitney, Times-Little Whitney and Todd Pacific series turned into races for survival Friday and Saturday when all of the classes were hit by gale-force winds.
The International Offshore Rule (IOR) fleet was the first to run into the wind Friday night when the yachts were hit by 40-knot winds as they approached Santa Barbara Island in the 156-mile Tri-Island race. There were 23 entries in the race, 10 started and only four finished.
Two yachts were dismasted--Sandy Martin’s Brisa and Anne Kahle’s Red Shift, both sailing for L.A. Yacht Club. There were no injuries.
Weather conditions on Saturday forced the LAYC race committee to shorten the race for the Times-Little Whitney and Todd Pacific series from the scheduled race to Catalina’s Ship Rock and return to a race around the buoys off Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors.
