Men Who Fled Poland in Crates Ask Asylum

HAMBURG, West Germany — Three Polish men were freed after eight days in a shipping container and have asked for political asylum in West Germany, Hamburg police said today.
The three told police they crawled into the container Feb. 27, before Polish customs officials sealed it at the Gdynia docks for transport to Hamburg. On Wednesday, dock workers heard the men pounding on the inside of the container and let them out.
