Point Loma Seeks Second State Championship

The Point Loma High School girls basketball team became the first San Diego Section basketball team to win a state championship when it won the Division II title last season. The Pointers will play for their second straight title tonight against Woodrow Wilson High of San Francisco in the Division I State championship game at 6:15 p.m. in the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

The Pointers (27-0) have won 56 straight games. They beat Delano, 59-49, last Saturday to win the Southern California Regional championship.

Sophomore Terri Mann, a 6-foot 1-inch center, has set a San Diego section single-season record with 520 rebounds this season. Mann is a two-time all-county selection. Junior Chanelle McCoy, a 5-2 guard, has been especially tough in the playoffs, averaging 25 points per game.

Woodrow Wilson (26-2) beat Woodland High, 55-42, to win the Northern California Regional championship. Senior Yvette Cole, a 5-9 guard who has averaged 16.4 points and 8.3 rebounds this season, led Wilson against Woodland with 21 points. Center Lisa Danner, a 6-1 senior, averages 13.9 points and 8.5 rebounds. Wilson allowed just 36.4 points a game this season.

The El Camino girls (27-1) will play for their first state title against Pleasant Valley High of Chico in the Division II game at 2:45 p.m.

The Wildcats are led by San Diego’s all-time leading scorer, Sharon Turner, who has averaged 33.6 points and 8.7 assists this season. Turner, a 5-9 guard, scored 29 points to lead El Camino to a 64-58 win against Washington Union of Easton in the Southern California Regional final. Center Vicki Evans (6-0) and forward Sheri Williamson (5-11) are very strong on the front line. Evans, a Times’ All-County selection along with Turner, averages 16.5 points and 12 rebounds. Williamson averages 16.4 points and 8 rebounds.

Pleasant Valley (27-0) beat McKinleyville, 46-45, in the Northern California Regional final. Pleasant Valley’s only loss over the past two seasons was to Point Loma in last season’s Division II State championship game. Forward Kari Christensen, a 5-9 senior, leads Pleasant Valley with 18.3 points and 10 rebounds per game. Guard Tracey Anderson, a 5-9 senior, averages 14.8 points.
