Lawndale to Train Volunteers for Cable TV Shows

The city has formed a nonprofit corporation to coordinate the training of volunteers to produce local programs that will be broadcast over the Group W cable television system.

Under terms of its franchise with the city, Group W provides free facilities and channels to non-commercial organizations for at least 16 hours of programming per week. The city’s nonprofit corporation, Lawndale Cable Usage Corp., will have five unpaid directors appointed by the City Council.

Paula Cone, assistant city manager, said the city will receive a mobile video van by the end of April and will soon be able to start producing programs. Lawndale will probably use existing cable studios in Gardena, which has been producing local cable programs for two years through its Group W franchise.
