Evans Leads Denver Past San Antonio, 16-2
DENVER — Vince Evans ran five yards for a touchdown and passed for another as the Denver Gold capitalized on San Antonio turnovers to beat the Gunslingers, 16-2, in a United States Football League game Monday night before a record-low Gold crowd of 13,901.
A turnover by San Antonio (1-4) set up the first score of the game. Quarterback Whit Taylor fumbled, and Denver’s John Nevens recovered at the Gunslingers’ 23-yard line. The Gold (3-2) scored five plays later on Evans’ run up the middle. Brian Speelman’s extra-point attempt was blocked.
Denver drove from its two-yard line to the San Antonio five, where Bill Johnson fumbled the ball away. But Denver got the ball back three plays later on Larry Canada’s fumble, and Speelman kicked a 47-yard field goal for a 9-0 lead with 11:10 left.
Less than two minutes later, Taylor fumbled, and Denver’s Mike Taliferro recovered at the San Antonio 27. Evans flipped a one-yard scoring pass to Leonard Harris with 5:39 left.
