One of two California condor eggs brought to the San Diego Wild Animal Park for incubation has been declared dead, park officials said. The egg was determined to be “inactive” Wednesday afternoon after it failed to show noticeable development for five days, said park spokesman Tom Hanscom. He said the egg was still in a very early stage of development. “We did find some development of membranes, but no embryo,” Hanscom said. He added that samples from the egg would be analyzed to determine the cause of death, but that results would not be known for at least three days. Although he described the loss of the egg as a “setback” to the Wild Animal Park’s efforts to protect the endangered bird, Hanscom said the remaining condor egg is developing normally and should hatch by April 15.
