Italian Priest Slain by Philippine Gunman
MANILA, Philippines — A gunman shot and killed an Italian Roman Catholic priest in a village store in Esperanza in the southern Philippines, the Philippine News Agency reported Friday.
It identified the priest as the Rev. Tullio Fabili, a member of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, which has missionaries working in remote areas on the island of Mindanao, 500 miles southeast of Manila.
The agency, quoting a report to regional military officials in Cotabato city, said a lone gunman approached Fabili from behind last week, shot him at close range, then set the priest’s motorcycle on fire and escaped.
