L.A. Council Calls Reagan Cemetery Visit Deplorable
Following a similar action by the state Senate, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday protested President Reagan’s scheduled visit to a West German military cemetery, calling it deplorable.
The council, with 10 of 15 members present, voted unanimously to protest the visit. Councilman John Ferraro pushed for the resolution, saying that many of his constituents are upset by the President’s plan to lay a wreath at a cemetery where Nazi SS combat troops are buried.
The council commended Reagan for deciding to add a visit to a former Nazi concentration camp as part of his West Germany trip, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the European phase of World War II.
On Thursday, the state Senate voted 26 to 0, with all but three Republicans abstaining, to urge Reagan to abandon his plan to visit to the military cemetery.
