Local News in Brief : Man, 34, Held After Nine-Hour Standoff

A 34-year-old man was taken into custody early Sunday morning after he fled a Canyon Country home where he had holed up for more than nine hours during an exchange of gunfire with sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

Carl Richard Winegar, who was treated for gunshot wounds he received in the buttocks during the standoff, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident in the 16000 block of Live Oak Springs Canyon Road.

He was arrested as he fled the house after a Special Weapons and Tactics team inadvertently started a fire with an explosive device that was being used to try to scare the man out of the house.

Winegar had been been spending the weekend with his brother and cousin after he quit his job as a card dealer in Nevada, Lt. Gary Vance said. About 10 p.m. Saturday, he began “acting quite bizarre” and grabbed a .22-caliber rifle, Vance said.

Winegar’s brother and cousin, neither of whom were identified, fled the home and called the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s substation.

Winegar allegedly began shooting at sheriff’s deputies when they arrived, and soon after he ran into a small guest house in the backyard where he holed up and continued shooting, according to Vance. None of the deputies was injured, although a patrol car was damaged when it was hit by several rounds fired by Winegar, Deputy Dave Hogan said.

Winegar, who was taken into custody about 7 a.m., was treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.
