Michigan Parade Thanks Vietnam Veterans
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — About 1,200 former soldiers marched Sunday in “The Parade That Never Was,” a belated tribute to Vietnam veterans.
As applause and cries of “Thank you!” rang out from the crowd of 5,000 lining the parade route, the veterans marched behind banners bearing the insignia of the units in which they fought a decade ago. The cheering was loudest as disabled veterans passed by.
“I drove here from Pennsylvania, not because this was supposed to be a great parade, but because in a way it was a debt I owed, along with a lot of others, to these men who fought for their country,” said onlooker Paul Samuelson.
