Strong Earthquake Hits Islands Off Alaskan Coast

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Geological Survey said a strong earthquake followed by two sharp aftershocks occurred Thursday in the Rat Islands area of the Aleutians, a sparsely populated chain of islands jutting into the Pacific Ocean off Alaska.
The main temblor was recorded at a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale and the aftershocks measured 5.5, according to the USGS National Earthquake Information Center.
