Ex-Officer Hurt in Stopping Theft
Aretired Los Angeles police officer was shot and wounded Thursday night while thwarting an armed robbery at the Mission Hills grocery store where he was shopping, police said Friday.
Orville Rees, 63, of Los Angeles was in serious condition at Holy Cross hospital in Mission Hills after being shot by one of two men attempting to rob Von’s Market, 10321 Sepulveda Blvd., said Lt. Robert Stemples.
Stemples said Rees was in the checkout line when he witnessed the robbery attempt and lunged for one of the men. The man fell and fired two shots, striking Rees once in the upper chest, Stemples said. The two men then fled on foot.
Stemples said Rees was unaware that the men were armed.
No one else was injured and no money was taken. Police have no suspects.
